HARTFORD, Conn. — Former UConn guard Kaitlyn Chen has been waived by the Golden State Valkyries, the team announced Wednesday.

The move was made as WNBA teams look to trim their rosters down to 12 for the start of the season. Golden State also waived four other players: Laeticia Amihere, Chloe Bibby, Elissa Cunane and Migna Touré. They had already waived No. 17 overall pick Shyanne Sellers earlier this month.

Chen was chosen with the 30th overall pick by Golden State in the WNBA draft last month, and she made history as the first player of Taiwanese descent to take the court in a WNBA game when she made her preseason debut May 6.

Chen played a combined 13 minutes in two preseason games and scored two points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out an assist.

She played a key role in the UConn women’s basketball team’s run to a 12th national championship this spring, averaging 11.9 points, 3.8 assists and 3 rebounds this season. Chen transferred to UConn last offseason after spending the first three years of her college career at Princeton.

The WNBA season is set to tip off on Friday.
