White Sox trade Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox for 4 prospects
Published in Baseball
DALLAS — Garrett Crochet caught the attention of several teams with his successful move from the bullpen to the rotation in 2024.
The Chicago White Sox are trading the All-Star pitcher to the Boston Red Sox for four prospects, according to multiple reports Wednesday: catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez.
Crochet went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts last season. He had 209 strikeouts in 146 innings. Crochet finished fourth in the American League in strikeouts despite having his innings monitored during the second half of the year. The innings total far exceeded his previous career high of 54 1/3 in 2021.
He had been one of the few bright spots during the dismal season in which the Sox set the modern-day record with 121 losses. Overall, Crochet went 9-19 with a 3.29 ERA and 294 strikeouts in 104 appearances (32 starts) during his four seasons.
After three years working out of the bullpen — and missing all of 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery — Crochet wanted the chance to compete for a rotation spot in 2024.
He had a great spring training and was named the team’s starter for opening day. He emerged as an ace for the club while setting several career highs — including 13 strikeouts on June 13 against the Seattle Mariners — along the way.
Crochet was named the AL Pitcher of the Month for June. And he earned his first All-Star selection.
There was plenty of speculation leading up to the July 30 trade deadline that Crochet would be dealt, but the team held on to him.
They found a trade partner in the Red Sox during the winter meetings. The 25-year-old has two more seasons of club control.
It’s the second time in less than one year the Sox have traded a top-line starter. They dealt Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres in March for four players, including starter Drew Thorpe and reliever Steven Wilson.
The White Sox were focused on position players for any potential major trade this offseason. And they accomplished that goal in the Crochet deal.
Teel was the No. 4 prospect in the Red Sox system, according to MLB.com. The 22-year-old had a combined .288/.386/.433 slash line with 13 home runs and 78 RBIs for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2024.
A first-round draft pick in 2023 (No. 14 overall), Teel has a .301/.404/.444 slash line with 15 home runs and 100 RBIs in two minor-league seasons.
The Red Sox selected Montgomery in the first round of the 2024 draft with the No. 12 pick. He was ranked the No. 5 prospect in the Red Sox system by MLB.com.
Montgomery, 21, had a .322 average with 27 home runs and 85 RBIs in 61 games for Texas A&M in 2024.
Meidroth, 23, was rated the No. 11 prospect in the Red Sox system. He slashed .293/.437/.400 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 57 RBIs and 105 walks in 122 games in 2024 for Worcester.
Meidroth has a .285/.425/.408 career slash line with 44 doubles, 20 home runs, 129 RBIs and 199 walks in 255 games in three minor-league seasons.
MLB.com rated Gonzalez as the No. 14 prospect in the Red Sox system. He went 4-3 with a 4.37 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 24 outings (19 starts) for Portland.
Gonzalez, 22, is 21-15 with a 3.97 ERA and 491 strikeouts in 100 career appearances (94 starts).
