MIAMI — Newly hired coach Javier Mascherano will not have much time to prepare Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates for a jam-packed 2025 schedule that includes a few high-profile games even before the team kicks off the MLS season on Feb. 22 with an afternoon home match against New York City FC.

Mascherano, a former Messi teammate at FC Barcelona and with the Argentine national team, replaced Tata Martino, who departed unexpectedly for personal reasons following the team’s first-round exit from the playoffs.

Martino led Miami to the 2024 Supporters’ Shield for best regular-season record, and the team broke the league points record in the process.

All eyes will be on Mascherano and his star-studded team as Inter Miami opens the preseason Jan. 18 in Las Vegas with a challenging showdown against back-to-back Mexican league champion Club America. The game will be played at 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL Raiders, and will likely sell out as Messi and Club America are big draws.

The other Inter Miami preseason game that has been announced is Feb. 14 against Orlando City at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, home of the NFL Buccaneers. Club managing owner Jorge Mas said there will also be at least one preseason game on foreign soil, but there are no plans for an extended overseas tour like the one the team did last year with seven games over five countries.

Five trophies are on the line for Inter Miami this year and Mascherano, who has no MLS experience and has never coached a professional team, will be tasked with managing a complicated schedule and a roster that relies heavily on Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, all of whom are in their 30s.

The first tournament on their schedule is the Concacaf Champions Cup, with the first leg on the road against Sporting Kansas City on Feb. 18. The second leg at home at Chase Stadium on Feb. 25, three days after Inter Miami’s MLS season opener.

MLS released its full 2025 schedule on Thursday. This season, there will be some featured Sunday fixtures with expanded coverage by Apple TV. Seven Inter Miami games will be played on Sunday.

Inter Miami games of note include March 16 on the road against Atlanta United, which knocked Messi’s team out of the playoffs and last week hired away Miami sporting director Chris Henderson.

On April 19, Inter Miami will play against the Columbus Crew at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, home of the Cleveland Browns. Then, on May 18 Miami plays at home against in-state rival Orlando City.

In mid-June, attention turns to the FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. Fourteen MLS stadiums will serve as hosts for the two events, so the league will pause regular season play from June 15 to June 24.

Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders are representing MLS in the Club World Cup. Miami will open the tournament on June 14 against Egyptian team Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The team will play its second group phase game against FC Porto of Portugal in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 19 and return to Hard Rock Stadium for the June 23 game against Brazilian club Palmeiras.

Leagues Cup 2025, the official Concacaf tournament between LIGA MX and MLS will be played July 29 to Aug. 31. Unlike the first two years of the competition, during which MLS took a break, this year’s tournament games will be interspersed during the MLS season.

Another league game of note in August: Inter Miami hosts MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 16.

MLS is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025 and launching its 30th team, San Diego FC, which kicks off against the Galaxy on Feb. 23.

All 510 league games will be shown on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Select matches will also be available on the FOX networks in the United States and TSN and RDS in Canada.
