Erik Karlsson's overtime winner gives Penguins victory over Golden Knights
Published in Hockey
PITTSBURGH — Sidney Crosby got two more goals. Tristan Jarry was strong again. And Erik Karlsson scored the overtime winner as the Penguins beat the Vegas Golden Knights, 3-2, at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.
Karlsson got the winner 49 seconds into overtime.
After he played well in Sunday’s 3-1 win at Minnesota, the Penguins rewarded Jarry with a second straight start. Jarry picked up right where he left off. He made nine saves in the first period, including key stops on Mark Stone and Tomas Hertl.
Soon after Jarry stopped Hertl on that 2-on-1 rush, the Penguins grabbed the lead on Crosby’s first goal of the game. Rickard Rakell set up Crosby on the power play.
Crosby, with his second score, pushed their lead to 2-0 early in the second period. The captain pretty much did it all himself. He was untouched as he skated in from the right point and fooled Ilya Samsonov, slipping a shot between the goalie’s legs.
That made it four straight goals scored by Crosby dating back to Sunday’s victory.
He has 105 multi-goal games. Among active players, only Alex Ovechkin has more.
The Knights got back within 2-1 with a power-play goal of their own. Jarry was slow to get set up, and Pavel Dorofeyev’s one-timer went through his wickets.
Jarry shook off that shaky goal and helped the Penguins withstand a push from the Knights early in the third period. There were faint “Jarry! Jarry!” chants as he confidently gloved down a Nicholas Roy shot, plucked a puck off the goal line to keep out Hertl’s wraparound try and then fought off Jack Eichel on a breakaway.
But the Knights kept coming. After the Penguins lost a defensive-zone draw, Noah Hanifin scored with six seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime.
No matter. Karlsson’s bullet from the right wing beat Samsonov in the first minute.
It was the first time Pittsburgh won back-to-back games since Jan. 29 and Feb. 1.
Around the boards
— The Penguins were without Tommy Novak and Ryan Shea on Tuesday. Shea is out week to week with an upper-body injury, and Novak, a newcomer, is day to day after he suffered a lower-body injury Sunday at Minnesota and exited that game.
— With Novak and Shea ailing, Pittsburgh made a couple of emergency recalls. Matt Nieto is back with the NHL club after a short stint in the minors. And Sebastian Aho is back for the first time since training camp. Neither was in the lineup on Tuesday.
— Connor Dewar was promoted to play on Evgeni Malkin’s line in Novak’s absence, but that experiment didn’t last long. Danton Heinen would replace Dewar there.
— Vladislav Kolyachonok assumed Shea’s spot next to Kris Letang on the top pair. Late in the second, he nearly got his first Penguins goal but rang one off the post.
— It’s too late now, but the power play has started to get going again. The Penguins have a PPG in four of the last five games in which their opponent took a penalty.
Coming up next
The Penguins are scheduled to practice Wednesday afternoon in Cranberry. Their five-game homestand will continue Thursday when they host the St. Louis Blues.
