Jets officially announce they will move on from QB Aaron Rodgers after two seasons

NEW YORK — After just two seasons, the Jets and Aaron Rodgers‘ marriage has officially ended following two disappointing seasons.
On Thursday, Gang Green officially announced that the team met with Rodgers last week and informed him that they would be moving on from him.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Fox Sports reported that the Jets planned to release Rodgers.
Rodgers will be free to sign with any team at the start of the new league year on March 12.
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey said in a statement released by the team. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
Glenn was noncommittal about Rodgers ‘ status during his introductory press conference on Jan. 27. He said he wanted to meet with Rodgers and his future would be “discussed.”
“I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement.. “His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career. From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next.”
At the end of the 2024 season, Rodgers told reporters that he understood that a new regime was coming to the Jets and they may want to start over at the quarterback position.
In April 2023, the Jets acquired Rodgers in a trade with the Packers, which received much fanfare. Many believed the four-time NFL MVP was the missing piece to the team contending for a Super Bowl.
However, Rodgers, 41, tore his Achilles four plays into his debut with the Jets and missed the rest of that season. In Rodgers’ absence, the Jets finished 7-10.
Rodgers returned for the 2024 season and started every game despite lingering injuries to his hamstring, knee and ankle. But his performance was far removed from his previous MVP form. He threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, but he also registered 11 interceptions and finished with a 48.1 QBR, which ranked 25th out of 32 qualified NFL passers.
Gang Green’s offense was also subpar. After being the NFL’s most disappointing team in recent memory, the Jets finished with a 5-12 record, 24th in yards and 25th in scoring.
Rodgers and the Jets’ slow start to the season was a significant reason coach Robert Saleh was fired after five games. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was also demoted, and Joe Douglas was fired as the general manager.
Now that Rodgers has been released, it is unclear whether he will continue his career. Rodgers previously said he would take time to determine whether he wants to return for a 21st season.
Rodgers had one year remaining on his contract, a non-guaranteed $37.5 million. He was due to count $23.5 million on the salary cap. The Jets will be left with $49 million in dead money, which can be spread over two seasons if they make him a designated post-June 1 release.
If so, the Jets would carry Rodgers’ 23.5 million on the salary cap until that date. After June 1, he would count $14 million on the cap in 2025, saving the Jets $9.5 million.
After Rodgers’ release, the Jets have only two quarterbacks on their roster. Tyrod Taylor, who was Rodgers’ backup last season, is the only experienced quarterback on the team. They also selected Jordan Travis in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. However, Travis missed last season after a season-ending injury suffered while at Florida State.
Gang Green is also expected to sign another veteran quarterback who could compete with Taylor and potentially Travis for the starting job. The Jets also could select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft.
With Rodgers gone, expect the Jets to make more moves to help them get more salary cap room. They also could release wide receiver Davante Adams, who has zero guaranteed money remaining on a contract he signed with the Raiders in 2022. Releasing Adams would save the Jets almost $30 million.
