Red, White and Blueland? Georgia congressman pushes a name change for Greenland

U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter not only wants President Donald Trump to acquire Greenland, but the Georgia Republican has offered up a bill in Congress to give the island a new name as well — “Red, White, and Blueland.”

Legislation that Carter filed Monday in the U.S. House would authorize the president to negotiate a deal with Denmark’s government “to purchase or otherwise acquire Greenland” — even though Danish leaders have said they have no desire to sell the Arctic island.

“President (Donald) Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority,” Carter said in a statement. “We will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”

The two-page bill makes no mention of the details of acquiring the island or how it would be paid for.

Carter, of St. Simons Island, is the second House Republican to offer up a bill on the acquisition of Greenland. Carter is a potential Republican candidate to run against Sen. Jon Ossoff next year.

A dozen GOP lawmakers are already backing a separate proposal called the ‘Make Greenland Great Again Act.’ Like Carter’s bill, that plan would authorize the president to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to purchase the island.

But that bill doesn’t have Carter’s name change.

“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Carter added.

One Democrat in Congress quickly mocked Carter’s bill.

“Next time a Republican says they are focused on lowering costs for working families, show them this,” said U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Texas.
