The closure of national pet microchip company Save This Life has left many pet owners worried and scrambling. Since collars can be removed and collar tags can fall off, microchips are a crucial part of reuniting a lost or stolen pet with their owner. In fact, pets with microchips are three times more likely to be reunited with their families.

The American Kennel Club and AKC Reunite offer tips for ensuring your pet is enrolled in a trusted microchip service.

Enroll your pet’s unique ID number and your contact information with a pet recovery service and then you will be contacted whenever the microchip is scanned.

“It’s so important for pet owners to verify that their pet’s microchip is enrolled with a stable, national organization like AKC Reunite,” said Tom Sharp, AKC Reunite President & CEO. “They should check the microchip ID number on the AAHA microchip directory ( www.aaha.org/petmicrochiplookup ). If the pet’s ID number is not listed as enrolled, they need to enroll the pet right away. AKC Reunite enrolls all brands of microchips and charges a one-time fee for as long as they own the pet charges no annual fees.”

When choosing a pet recovery service, make sure you are not charged annual fees. You will also want 24/7 access to always speak to a live person when you need help and your pet is missing. Many online providers only have limited “office hours” and “free” registries can re-sell your information for marketing purposes and often have no live support.

Since 1995, over 11 million pet owners have entrusted AKC Reunite pet microchipping and lost pet recovery service. As a not-for-profit organization, AKC Reunite also supports pet disaster relief initiatives, funds K9 officer programs, and donates microchip scanners to shelters and rescues.
