Do It Yourself or Not: Install a gas wall heater

Gene and Katie Hamilton, Tribune Content Agency on

If your home has inadequate heating or a poor heat distribution system, consider installing a built-in, vent-free natural gas space heater. That will give a room a constant source of heat providing a warm, safe environment.

Connected to a permanent gas line, these mini-units work just like a home's full-size gas furnace. They are energy-efficient and solve the problem of the all-too-often cold bathroom or bedroom that's at the end of the hall. These heaters are ideal for a small room, where space is a premium, because they can be installed on the floor or mounted on the wall. All vent-free heaters certified by the American Gas Association have built-in safety pilot systems to shut off the flames if there is any interruption in the gas supply, or if they detect too little oxygen in the immediate area.

A heating contractor will charge $1,032, which includes labor and material, to install a 17,000BTU natural gas space heater and connect it to an existing gas line. This is not a job for a homeowner, it’s best left to a licensed professional. The job involves measuring the pipe runs, "dry" installing the pipe and fittings, placing the unit in position, completing the connections and, finally, having it inspected by the building department of your local area. No matter how handy you are, hire a professional for a safe, secure and long-lasting heating system.
