Stellantis will extend employee pricing program, joining Ford

The parent of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram will extend a program offering employee discount pricing to customers at least until early June, dealers learned Thursday.

Stellantis NV told retailers that its "Employee Pricing for All" program will continue for this month, and those discounts can now be used on top of select other vehicle incentives.

The pricing program, originally named "America's Freedom of Choice," was set to expire Wednesday, and now shows an end date of June 2 on the carmaker's brand websites. It previously allowed customers to choose between the employee price or current cash incentives on a particular model, but is now "stackable" with other offers, dealers were told. A few select models and trims are excluded from the renewed employee offer, which also doesn't apply to fleet customers.

Stellantis followed Ford Motor Co. in offering employee pricing for all shortly after President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on imported vehicles took effect in early April — a play by both carmakers to boost sales and pick up market share at a chaotic moment for the industry.

Ford earlier this week said it would extend its employee pricing offer through the July 4 weekend. Both carmakers recently released patriotic advertising campaigns touting the employee offers as well as their American-assembled models. Stellantis said it will continue to support the updated employee pricing campaign with national and regional advertising.

"Automakers and dealers are seeing this as an opportune time to make a grab for market share," Erin Keating, an executive analyst at Cox Automotive, said in a presentation earlier this week. "Even those that anticipate significant cost impact recognize the moment as an opportunity to take advantage of the froth in the market."

The Jeep and Ram maker has grappled with a year of sales declines, and in the first quarter its overall U.S. sales once again fell by 12% compared to last year.

But Stellantis retailers said they are feeling more upbeat in recent weeks, especially as customers have flocked to dealerships to get ahead of any tariff price increases, and as the automaker's more aggressive incentives and other sticker price adjustments this year help drive showroom traffic.

Mike Bettenhausen, who owns a pair of Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealerships in suburban Chicago and is chairman of the automaker's national dealer council, said Wednesday that April was "a very positive month, considering the tariff situation." For a couple of weeks his two dealerships saw a surge in sales, he said, well above the same timeframe last year.

Bettenhausen said Stellantis executives have recently made clear they see "a huge opportunity" to boost sales at least through May with aggressive offers, just as some automakers are looking at sticker price increases to make up for the higher import taxes.

"They're going to keep us rolling," the dealer said.
