Giants met with Rams QB Matthew Stafford's representatives in Indianapolis: source

INDIANAPOLIS — Joe Schoen wasn’t kidding about “swinging” for a quarterback.
The Giants met with Rams QB Matthew Stafford‘s representatives on Tuesday here in Indianapolis at the NFL combine, according to a source.
Stafford’s camp has permission from the Rams to speak with other teams this week to gauge the market in the event of a potential trade.
Schoen said Tuesday morning that he was going to “look for the best player available that can help us win games in ’25” and vowed that he would “keep swinging at the position.”
And by Tuesday night, the Giants and Stafford’s reps were talking about a potential fit.
The Giants are not Stafford’s only suitor in the event of a trade, of course.
Raiders minority owner Tom Brady recently hosted Stafford, 37, at his home in Montana and has been working to recruit Stafford to Las Vegas, Fox Sports reported Wednesday.
Stafford has the option to continue playing with the Rams, too.
But he wants a raise from his $27 million 2025 salary and $40 million cap hit to do it. And so far he and the team can’t find a common ground there, although they are continuing to talk.
Rams coach Sean McVay said on the Fitz and Whit podcast that the team’s “first goal in my mind is to have” Stafford “come back here as the quarterback.”
But their financial disagreement prompted both parties to seek more information on what a future without Stafford in L.A. might look like.
“There’s no discrepancy in us wanting him to continue to lead the way and be our quarterback,” McVay said. “At the end of the day, we had something in mind, he had something in mind, and nobody was right or wrong. And then ultimately you’re saying hey there’s a ton of interest because this guy’s an incredible player.
“There does have to be an element of understanding, well, what does that future look like without this freakin’ ‘G’ that’s been our quarterback for the last four years?” McVay added. “For us to be able to make the most educated decision in terms of the cash budget that we operate on, the draft comp that you would get in return, you just need to be able to have all the parameters to at least explore.”
A Stafford trade could open the door to four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers signing in L.A.
The New York Daily News exclusively reported on Tuesday that Rodgers, 41, prefers to play for the Rams and that the outgoing Jets QB would bring Davante Adams with him once the Jets wide receiver becomes a free agent.
Stafford’s flirtation with suitors like the Giants and Raiders conceivably could end up leading to nothing more than a Rams raise with a renegotiated contract.
However, this is a lot of dancing for a team, player and agent to do just to end up where they started.
This is more than smoke. The Giants have taken action. So have Stafford and his representatives and the Raiders.
The stakes are sky high. And the Giants are in play.
